Propylene Glycol (PG) is a type of food additive that s usually made using two similar ways industrially. One way of making PG is to heat food-grade propylene oxide, which comes from petroleum to 200-220°C. The other way to make PG is by heating a small amount of an acid promoter with propylene oxide to 150-180°C. This is one of the simplest and safest industrial syntheses. The word "Glycol" simply states that the compound is a part of the alcohol family. The word "Propylene," on the other hand, refers to the number of carbons in the molecule, which is three in this case.
